Jean-Paul Sartre Kimdir?

Jean Paul Sartre, regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, was born on June 21, 1905, in Paris, France. Born to a well-off middle-class family, Sartre’s childhood was marked by challenges, including the death of his father when Sartre was just 15 months and a bout of illness that left him with a permanent disability in his right eye. Raised primarily by his mother and his grandfather, a professor at Sarbonne University, Sartre was exposed to math and literature from a young age. He continued his education at elite schools in Rochelle and Paris, completing his doctorate in philosophy in 1929.

Throughout his lifetime, Sartre made significant contributions to philosophy, literature, and journalism. Known for his unique brand of existentialist philosophy, he also shaped existentialist Marxism and was politically active during periods of social unrest. From an early age, Sartre showed an interest in Western philosophy, drawing inspiration from works by the likes of Immanuel Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and Martin Heidegger.

Sartre’s understanding of philosophy deeply influenced his work as an author and playwright. His writing portrayed the absurdity and struggle of existence, often invoking themes of freedom, responsibility, and the individual’s place in society. His works include “Nausea” (1938), “Being and Nothingness” (1943), and “No Exit” (1944).

Beyond his writings, Sartre was also a vocal critic of social injustice. He criticized the French government’s role during the Algerian War and heavily critiqued the Soviet Union. His political engagement extended to his support of the anti-war movement during the Vietnam War and his involvement in the Russell tribunal, a committee dedicated to investigating war crimes.

Despite facing criticism and controversy throughout his career, Sartre refused to shy away from uncomfortable truths. He turned down the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964 in fear of compromising his independent voice. Sartre passed away in Paris on April 15, 1980, leaving behind a legacy of thought-provoking philosophy and literature. He is remembered for his intellectual urgency, commitment to freedom, and unwavering conviction, marking him as a leading figure in 20th-century philosophy.
